galería elba benítez is looking forward to welcoming you at our booth C22 at Art Basel Miami Beach

First Choice / Vernissage: December 1, 2010 (by invitation only) Miami Beach Convention Center
Please find below an overview and brief description of the artists whose work we will present at Art Basel Miami Beach this year.
IGNASI ABALLÍ
Ignasi Aballí (Spain, 1958) traces the elusive marks left by the passage of time in work that uses an eclectic range of unconventional materials such as dust, corrosion, newspaper clippings, shredded banknotes or typewriter correction fluid. The delicate visual poetry that emerges is instilled with a haunting yet unsentimental sense of absence and ephemerality that pervades Aballí’s conceptually-oriented sculptures, paintings and photographs. Aballí has had solo shows at Macba, the Pinoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo, the Serralves Museum and elsewhere, and he was invited to participate in the 2007 Venice Biennial.
CARLOS BUNGA
Carlos Bunga (Portugal, 1976) creates process-oriented works -- installations, performances, video, drawings – that refer to and intervene in their architectural surroundings. While often using ordinary, unassuming materials such as packing cardboard and adhesive tape, the resulting finished works involve an extreme degree of aesthetic care and delicacy, as well as a conceptual complexity derived from the inter-relationship between doing and undoing, between unmaking and remaking. Bunga has had solo shows at the Miami Art Museum and MARCO, and he has participated in Manifesta 5, the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, Sao Paulo Biennial and the Carrara Sculpture Biennial.
FERNANDA FRAGATEIRO
The work of Fernanda Fragateiro (Portugal, 1962) explores space in its various phenomenological manifestations -- architectural, sculptural, private, public, temporal, socially determined, gender-defined – via works of sculpture, installation and outdoor interventions. While varying frequently in scale and drawing on a wide range of reference material, Fragateiro’s work maintains a strong signature style, born of a meticulous minimalist aesthetic of form, color and surface texture. Her work was featured in the 2010 Lisbon Architecture Triennial.
CARLOS GARAICOA
Carlos Garaicoa (Cuba, 1967) creates architecture-based installations that are characterized by an intense engagement with contemporary cities, and in particular with his native Havana. Incorporating architectural models, photos, drawings, video and language, Garaicoa’s wide-ranging yet highly personal work is at all times imbued with an exquisite execution and a carefully-controlled aesthetics that manage to invoke poetry as well as politics and to suggest intimacy as well as provocation. Garaicoa has had solos shows at the ICA in Philadelphia, MOCA in Los Angeles, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and other museums internationally, and he has participated Documenta 11, the Sao Paulo Biennial, the Venice Biennial.
MARIO GARCIA TORRES
The research-driven work of Mario García Torres (Mexico, 1975) approaches art history as a rich artistic material in itself. García Torres’s varied work includes photographic presentations, conceptual installations and language-based pieces, and frequently revisits the overlooked interstices in the art of recent generations. But while rooted in research, Garcia Torres’s lively and intriguing finished works actively invoke the artist’s individual presence, thus entering in, partaking of and ultimately extending the very history under revision. García Torres has had solo shows in the Reina Sofía Museum, the Kunsthalle Zurich, the Stedelijk Museum and elsewhere.
